Hello my name is LaVenus Washington and welcome to my blog. I have set this blog up as a way to display my professional side. I am currently a freshman at Rider University. I am majoring in accounting with a minor in event planning. Right now I am managing my time very well between schoolwork and being involved in two campus clubs, R.O.C.A.S. and the Black Student Union Choir, where I am also the secretary. In addition I hope to obtain an internship in accounting that will allow me to utilize my people skills and great work ethics that I have learned from my work experience as a sales associate for 2 years. This job also allowed me to have the experience of working with a group in a fast pace setting. This experience showed me the value of a coherent environment. Here is my resume so you may view other skills that I have learned from various jobs and activities. My goal is to graduate with a Masters and become a successful auditor.
Throughout my life I have been surrounded my diversity, especially while I attended high school. The diverse surroundings here ranged from, ethnicity, disabilities, and even location. In addition I have a great passion for traveling, which allows me to experience many different cultures. This was good for assisting me to have an open mind, in which I hope this blog will display. Furthermore, I hope that my friendly but hard working personality shines through!

My Inspiration to Succeed
Question: What inspires me to keep striving for success?
From since I can remember I’ve always been a child determined for success. To this day I still have previous teachers who wish to have me in their presence because of my strong determination. For example…

…So to answer the answer the question what inspires me to keep striving for success? Well to start off, a personal quote that I have created for myself is, “If you have been given a task to complete, you might as well do your best.” I choose to let this quote guide me through success in life because of three reasons.
1.) Who ever assigned you the task believed that you would complete it to the best of your ability, because of previous ways that you have shown them. If somebody else has that much confidence in you, you no doubt should have confidence in yourself.
2.) Next is, the outcome and what you produce from the task given, is a reflections of yourself. It displays your amount of effort, whether you’re a hard worker, etc.
3.) Lastly, which is really simple, no matter what you still have to complete it, so why waste your time by producing something that isn’t going to have a good personal image of yourself shining through.
When I think about all the people who have tried to help me achieve excellence, I see no reason in letting them down, or letting the time they have invested in me go to waste. I truly am the child of my mother and father. My inspiration to thrive educationally comes from my mother. She is always reading and looking for new ways to learn. My inspiration to thrive with my job and in the future, my career, comes from my father. He is always willing to complete a job, and with much enthusiasm. Lastly my inspiration to be successful in life is, life itself. I look at what I don’t want to be, and remind myself that this is what I could be if I choose to let myself stray away from the path of success that I KNOW has been set for me.

Why Be An Auditor?
From since I can remember I’ve always had a passion for math. Once my mother realized that I excelled in this subject, she suggested that I be an accountant. Now when this suggestion came about I was too young to know exactly what an accountant was. As I grew older I did my research on various websites and I noticed the job description given seemed pretty interesting.
As stated previously on my page, in 7th grade I participated in a Toshiba Invention Competition. Within in my group of four team members I was the designated researcher, because my teacher stated I was talented at that job. After hearing this I was now on a search to figure out what career I could have in which incorporated both math and research.
Years later when I was a sophomore in high school I had to create a project that showed what I envisioned my life to be in 8 years. This meant I had to decide what my dream career would be. As I researched different accounting jobs on Salary.com I came across an auditor. This word immediately rung a bell in my head. I remembered my mother once stating that she was being audited. She explained that this meant somebody was verifying what she claimed on her financial statements to be true.
Since I discovered that auditing fell under accounting I was now more interested. I did my some more research on this job and I had finally made a connection between math and researcher. If I were to become an auditor I would have do research through my clients’ financial statements in order to prove accuracy of what they claimed.

Displays of My Work
As a freshman I took a course entitled, “Intro to Speech Communication.” For me personally this was the most helpful class during my first semester. We had various speech assignments with different themes such as, entertainment, passion, persuasive, and etc. Below I have the outline, PowerPoint, and web cam footage of me presenting my information speech on Minimum Wage.

In addition to the various speeches that I had to perform this Blog is also another example of the helpful assignments that I had to complete within this course.

My Volunteer Work
Another passion that I have is helping others. It brings a smile to my face whenever I know that I have personally made another person’s day easier. As shown on my resume , I have had my share of volunteer work.
The Neighborhood House Association
I have volunteered here for three consecutive summers. The Neighborhood House is a non-profit daycare center, which also offers after school and summer camp services. Before volunteering here, I attended for 8 years. As I looked back on those years, it was pretty apparent of the many ways that the Neighborhood House had positively impacted my life and prepared me for the future. This made me very ambitious about giving back to them through my volunteer services. Here I had to prepare food and various activities, decorate the classroom, and participate in different events.

Union County Vocational Technical High School
This is the school I attended for the four years of my high school learning. Being that this school was considered an academically advanced school, they had many information sessions, to information prospective students of the way the process worked to be accepted in. For many of these sessions I would volunteer to help guide the guest through out different parts of the school, while also informing them along the way. In addition I assisted in decorating for various events, and also duties in the office.
Various Churches
In my hometown of Plainfield, NJ, I attend the Mount Olive Baptist Church, where I am actively helping whenever I can. Whether it’s performing tasks throughout different services, such as ushers, or serving food during different events. In addition during the Summer of 2008, I volunteered at church in Trenton, along with other people who are apart of E.O.P. We had the task of cleaning the church both inside and out.
